This is a recurring topic, at least in my career.

One of the main arguments for estimates is that the estimation process brings a conversation, and the value is not in the estimates but in the conversation itself.

I believe you can have the same conversation while slicing your stories.

I think there is no software developer who is not touched by estimates :)

Such discussions can also be handled without estimates. As you mentioned, it can be done during analyzing and slicing items, because you still need to deeply focus on the scope. The main advantage is that you do not need to think about an estimates.

If you show enough patience and perseverance, even the most hardened opponents of getting rid of estimates will notice an increase in team's productivity.

One of the biggest problems regarding changes in estimation is that we don't like change. Any change takes time, masses of convincing, showing certain patterns. That's why estimation is such a difficult topic.
